The Grade I Chandelier Stakes featured the second try in stakes company for the two Bob Baffert fillies American Cleopatra and Noted and Quoted. The former had the hopes of the racing community, but it would be Noted and Quoted who defeated With Honors in a ding-dong stretch duel to win the Chandelier Stakes.

Despite the impressive win, Noted and Quoted is not seemingly well bred bred for the eight and one half furlong distance. The grey or roan filly is sired by the young stallion, The Factor, who stands at Lane’s End during the Northern Hemisphere breeding season. During his racing career, The Factor managed to win at distances of six to eight and one half furlongs.

The stallion also was part of some of the best crops of racing in recent years, defeating horses like Caleb’s Posse, Comma to the Top, Smiling Tiger, Archarcharch, Amazombie, and J P’s Gusto.

The Factor has his first crop of two-year-olds running this year, which not only includes Noted and Quoted, but also turf stakes winner named Senora Acero.

Noted and Quoted was produced by a mare named Silver Cub, a grey or roan daughter of City Zip. Silver Cub raced exclusively at Charles Town and managed to only win twice, both times at distances of four and one half furlongs, while never winning, or placing, beyond that distance.

Silver Cub has two other foals of racing age, Silver Mine (by Eskendereya) and Victorious Heart (by Lion Hearted). Both are winners, but are two completely different types of horses. Salt Mine is a winner at eight and one half furlongs on turf while Victorious Heart is a winner at four and one half furlongs on dirt.

City Zip, the broodmare sire of Noted and Quoted, is a half sibling to top racehorse and stallion Ghostzapper. As a racehorse, City Zip never won a race that was farther than six furlongs, however he did manage to place at distances of seven to eight and one half furlongs while racing exclusively on dirt.

As a stallion, City Zip is making a name for himself when it comes to his turf runners, especially fillies. City Zip has sired horses such as Reneesgotzip, Zipessa, Catch a Glimpse, and Dayatthespa.

As a racehorse, Noted and Quoted seems to have it all. She has the connections to help her remain successful, but when it comes to pedigree, I believe she the Chandelier distance will be the farthest she’s willing to go. It is true that pedigree can only predict so much it is hard to argue the role it plays as distances increase.

Will Noted and Quoted be able to repeat her hard fought victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies? I will be surprised if she does.
