Since moving to the lush green lawn Catch a Glimpse has been unstoppable. She won going short, she has won going long. She’s won against her own gender and she has dominated males. No matter what you do you just can’t seem to catch little miss Catch a Glimpse.
August 20th Catch a Glimpse will look to continue her winning streak in the Lake Placid Stakes (GII) at Saratoga Racecourse. If she does, then that will bring her winning tally to nine for nine over the turf course.
The Mark Casse trainee was last seen winning the Belmont Oaks (GI), where she defeated Time and Motion by half a length. That day she covered one and one quarter miles, but for the Lake Placid she cuts back to a mile and one eighth.
"I don't know if we know what her preferred distance is,” Casse said. “but cutting back shouldn't be any disadvantage for her. If anything, it's more of an advantage for her.
“We're just excited to get the chance to run her again. She's really done well since the Belmont Oaks, and it seems she is sitting on another big race."
Time and Motion, who has been beaten by Catch a Glimpse on two occasions, will try to turn the tables on that one, after her short defeat in the Belmont Oaks. Though even her trainer, Jimmy Toner, admits that will be a tough task.
"I guess you just have to put pressure on [Catch a Glimpse] early,” Toner mused. “But meanwhile do you take yourself out of your own game to do that? "That filly is going to be tough to beat.
“She's a top-quality filly, and there is a reason she has put up all those 1s before her name. It is what it is. We're going to give it another try and see what happens.”
Drawing directly to the inside of Catch a Glimpse, the one post, could see to it that Time and Motion does get the chance to pressure that rival in the opening stages. Though, even that may not make a difference as Catch a Glimpse has matured quite a bit, not getting riled up as easily as she did when she was younger.
"He (Florent Geroux) doesn't mess with her too much,” noted Norm Casse, assistant to his father. “I think some guys would get in her way and that would be very detrimental. Florent seems to get along with horses like that, but she’s definitely matured recently too.
“"We figured out how to make her happy in the paddock and how to make her happy in the morning. But really, knock on wood, the crowd doesn't really rile her up as much anymore, either."
Norm went on to say that he believes the filly’s biggest asset is her speed, which allows her to always sit the perfect trip.
"She likes to go," Norm Casse said. "She likes to get out there and be comfortable.
“She typically doesn't ever have a bad trip, and I think that makes it a little easier to keep this winning streak going.”
Will Time and Motion be able to turn the tables on a horse who is able to work the perfect trip in every race? Will the third time be the charm, or does Catch a Glimpse prove too overwhelming once again?
